Life Summary
Choo Kyung-ho is the mayor of Daegu.

In the 2026 ninth nationwide local elections, he defeated Democratic Party of Korea candidate Kim Boo-kyum by 6.49 percentage points and was elected the 36th mayor of Daegu.

He was born in Daegu on July 29, 1960.

He graduated from Keisung High School in Daegu and Korea University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of Oregon in the United States.

After passing the 25th Higher Civil Service Examination, he worked at the Economic Planning Board, the Ministry of Finance and Economy, and the Ministry of Finance and Economy.

He served as director-general of the Financial Policy Bureau at the Financial Services Commission, presidential secretary for economic and financial affairs, vice chairman of the Financial Services Commission, and first vice minister of economy and finance.

He left public service after serving as minister of government policy coordination to run in the general election.

He ran in Dalseong County, Daegu, in the 20th and 21st general elections and won both races.

He served as president of the Yeouido Institute, deputy secretary-general for strategic planning of the Liberty Korea Party, and senior deputy floor leader of the People Power Party.

During the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, he served as secretary of the planning and coordination subcommittee of the presidential transition committee in 2022 before being nominated as deputy prime minister for economic affairs and minister of economy and finance.

He stepped down as deputy prime minister to run in the 22nd general election and won a third term as a lawmaker representing Dalseong County, Daegu.

He was elected floor leader of the People Power Party and led the party during the December 3, 2024 insurrection.

He was elected the 36th mayor of Daegu.
