He graduated from Kyungbock High School in Seoul and earned his degree in dentistry from the School of Dentistry at Seoul National University. He later obtained both his master’s and doctoral degrees in dentistry from the university’s graduate school.

He taught at the School of Dentistry at Seoul National University for 34 years.

Drawing on his experience leading the Intelligent Biomaterial Interface Engineering Center (IBEC) within the school, he went on to establish NIBEC.

He has also served as president of the Korean Academy of Periodontology, the Korean Society for Medical and Biological Engineering, the Korean Association of Dental School Deans, and the Korean Society for Biomaterials.
