Life Summary
Hur Dong-soo is the chairman of the Board of Trustees of Yonsei University and also serves as honorary chairman of GS Caltex.

Since being appointed chairman in 2017, he has been reappointed three times. His current term runs through April 2028.

He is focused on enhancing Yonsei University's educational and research capabilities and strengthening its financial foundation in order to elevate it as the leading private university in Asia.

He was born on July 13, 1943 (lunar calendar) in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, as the second son of Hur Jung-gu, former honorary chairman of Samyang Corporation and eldest son of GS founder Hur Man-jung.

He graduated from Bosung High School in Seoul and earned a degree in chemical engineering from Yonsei University.

He later obtained both his master’s and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin in the United States.

After working at a research center of Chevron, a U.S. oil and gas company, he joined GS Caltex.

In 1994, he was appointed CEO and went on to serve as chairman of the board and CEO of the company.

A passionate Go player, he served as chairman of the Korea Baduk Association for 15 years.

He places great importance on corporate social responsibility and once served as chairman of the Community Chest of Korea.
