Hwang Jong-woo is the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries.

He was chosen as the right person to lead the era of Arctic shipping routes and push ahead without disruption with the completion of Korea’s maritime capital in order to carry out President Lee Jae-myung’s campaign pledges.

He was born in Busan in 1967.

He graduated from Busan Dong High School and the Department of Law at Seoul National University.

In 1995, he entered public service by passing the 38th Higher Civil Service Examination.

During the Roh Moo-hyun administration, he served as an administrative officer in the Office of the Presidential Secretary for Speechwriting, and during the Moon Jae-in administration, he was a senior administrative officer in the Office of the First Deputy Chief of Staff to the President.

He is a career bureaucrat who served in a wide range of key posts at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, including Director of the Marine Conservation Division, Director of the Port Logistics Planning Division, Director of the Marine Policy Division, spokesperson, Director General for Maritime Safety, and Director General for Planning and Coordination.
