Jun Jae-soo is the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries.
He has been entrusted with the special mission of establishing a maritime capital zone by relocating the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to Busan, a key national goal of the Lee Jae-myung administration.
He was born in April 1971 in Uiryeong County, Gyeongsangnam-do.
He graduated from Gudeok High School in Busan and earned a bachelor’s degree in History Education from Dongguk University, where he also received a master’s degree in Political Science.
He joined the Roh Moo-hyun administration as an administrative officer for the Economic Subcommittee 1 of the Presidential Transition Committee, later serving as Policy Aide at the Ministry of Finance and Economy, Administrative Officer at the Presidential Office’s Economic Affairs Office, and Chief Secretary of the Second Presidential Secretariat.
He was defeated in both the 2006 local elections and the 18th and 19th general elections. However, he ran again in the 20th National Assembly election and was elected after defeating incumbent lawmaker Park Min-shik, former Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
In Busan, he became a three-term lawmaker under the Democratic Party banner and was selected as the right person to fulfill the Lee Jae-myung administration’s pledge to relocate the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to Busan.
He has also been tasked with securing a new growth engine through the development of the Arctic Sea Route.
