He was born on September 4, 1950, in Seoul, the son of Kim Yeon-jun, the late founder of Hanyang University who was also an entrepreneur and a musician.
After graduating from the affiliated high school of Seoul National University’s College of Education, he studied education at Yonsei University. He later pursued graduate studies at New York University and earned a doctorate in education from Columbia University.
In 1984, he was appointed professor of educational technology at Hanyang University, which had been founded by his father.
In 1993, he was named president of Hanyang University and led the institution for 18 years. In 2011, he stepped down from the presidency and became chairman of the Hanyang Foundation.
He has led Hanyang University and its foundation for more than 30 years.
He contributed to Hanyang University's rise as one of the top five private universities in South Korea.
Recently, he has faced the challenge of overcoming a liquidity crisis, including putting the largest shareholder stake in Hanyang Securities up for sale.
He has served in various leadership roles, including president of the Korean Society for Educational Technology, vice president of the Korean Olympic Committee, vice president of the Association of Private University Presidents, vice president of the Korea University Council for Social Service, and advisory member of the National Science and Technology Advisory Council.
He is known for his humility and bold personality, traits reminiscent of his father. He has a strong interest in university sports.
