Koo Yun-cheol has been nominated as the first Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Economy and Finance under the Lee Jae-myung administration.

He is focusing his efforts on reviving the “3% growth engine,” a core national policy goal of the Lee administration.

Koo was born in 1965 in Seongju County, North Gyeongsang Province.

He graduated from Yeongshin High School in Daegu and earned a degree in economics from Seoul National University. He later obtained a master’s degree from the Graduate School of Public Administration at Seoul National University, another master’s in public policy from the University of Wisconsin, and a doctorate in business administration from Chung-Ang University.

While attending the graduate school at Seoul National University, he passed the 32nd civil service examination and began his public service career.

He primarily served in the Budget Office of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

Earlier, while working at the former Ministry of Planning and Budget, he was in charge of budget and fiscal affairs. During the Roh Moo-hyun administration, he was appointed as the Blue House Secretary for Personnel Policy. Recognized for his performance, he was later promoted to Director of the Office for National Affairs.

He continued to serve in key budget positions, including Director of the Social Budget Division, Director General for Budget Planning, Budget Office Director, and 2nd Vice Minister at the Ministry of Economy and Finance. In these roles, he oversaw the expansionary fiscal policy under the Moon Jae-in administration.

After the launch of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, he left public office and went on to serve as Co-Chair of the North Gyeongsang Province Investment Promotion Committee and as a special professor at the Department of Economics at Seoul National University.
