Woo Sang-ho is the Senior Presidential Secretary for Political Affairs.
He was born on December 12, 1962, in Odeok-ri, Dongsong-eup, Cheorwon County, Gangwon Province, as the youngest of three sons and one daughter.
He began his education at Dongsong Elementary School in Cheorwon but transferred to a school in Seoul in the sixth grade. He graduated from Yongmun High School in Seoul and earned a bachelor’s degree in Korean Language and Literature from Yonsei University.
In 2006, he received a master’s degree in Public Policy from the Graduate School of Public Administration at Yonsei University.
He served as president of the student council at Yonsei University and as the inaugural vice president of the National Council of Student Representatives. He is widely regarded as a leading figure of “Generation 86,” a group of student activists who entered university in the 1980s and were born in the 1960s.
As a four-term lawmaker, he is considered a senior politician known for his strong ability to build relationships across party lines.
Ahead of the 16th general election, he was recruited as part of the “young blood” for the then-ruling Millennium Democratic Party and ran for a seat in the Seodaemun-gap district of Seoul, but was defeated. He entered the National Assembly in the 17th general election as a candidate of the Uri Party in the same district. After losing in the 18th general election, he was re-elected in the 19th and 21st elections, ultimately serving four terms.
With a background in Korean literature and a record of winning literary awards during his university years, he served multiple times as spokesperson for various parties, including the Millennium Democratic Party, Uri Party, United Democratic Party, and New Politics Alliance for Democracy.
During the 20th National Assembly, as a three-term lawmaker, Woo served as the Democratic Party’s floor leader. During the impeachment crisis of former President Park Geun-hye, he played a key role in winning over defectors from the ruling Saenuri Party.
After the Democratic Party's defeat in the June 1, 2022 local elections, he was appointed head of the party’s emergency leadership committee and played a central role in stabilizing the party.
In the June 3, 2025 early presidential election, he served as the head of the campaign committee for the Gangwon region, his hometown, helping President Lee campaign in traditionally challenging districts.
He is known as an eloquent politician with rational thinking and a down-to-earth manner.
