Yim Jong-ryong is the Chairman and CEO of Woori Financial Group.
He achieved a long-standing goal by acquiring an insurance company, accelerating the expansion of the group's non-banking portfolio.
He was born on August 3, 1959, in Boseong, South Jeolla Province.
He graduated from Yeongdong High School in Seoul and majored in economics at Yonsei University. He completed a master’s program in public administration at Seoul National University’s Graduate School of Public Administration and earned a master’s degree in economics from Oregon State University.
He began his public service career after passing the 24th Higher Civil Service Examination.
At the Ministry of Finance and Economy, he held various key positions including Director of the Banking System Division, the Securities System Division, the Policy Coordination Division, and Director General of Financial Policy. He also served as Senior Economic Secretary to President Lee Myung-bak.
After serving as First Vice Minister of Strategy and Finance and then as Chief of Staff at the Prime Minister’s Office, he concluded his government service. He later returned to the public sector as Chairman of NH NongHyup Financial Group and then Chairman of the Financial Services Commission.
Before being appointed Chairman of Woori Financial Group in 2023, he worked as a visiting professor at Yonsei University’s Graduate School of Economics and as an advisor at the law firm Yulchon LLC.
He was nominated to be Prime Minister at the end of the Park Geun-hye administration, but the appointment was voided due to the president’s impeachment. He was also offered the position of Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs by President Yoon Suk-yeol, but he declined.
Known for his exceptional mediation skills, he has earned the nickname “Zhuge Liang of the financial world.”
