Yun Ho-jung, Minister of the Interior and Safety

Yun Ho-jung is serving as Minister of the Interior and Safety. He is focusing on institutional design to implement the prosecution reform of the Lee Jae-myung administration, including the adjustment of investigative powers and the establishment of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency. He is also interested in improving the national disaster response system.

He was born on March 27, 1963, in Gapyeong-eup, Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province. He graduated from Chuncheon High School and Seoul National University with a degree in philosophy.

During his college years, he was actively involved in the student movement.

He began his political career as a planning officer in the Planning and Coordination Office of the Peace Democratic Party, later serving as secretary to lawmaker Han Gwang-ok and as deputy spokesperson of the Democratic Party.

He was first elected to the National Assembly in the 17th general election representing Guri, Gyeonggi Province, but lost in the 18th. He was then re-elected in the 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd general elections, becoming a five-term lawmaker.

He served as policy chief for presidential candidate Moon Jae-in, as chair of the Democratic Party’s Policy Committee, and as the party’s secretary-general. In the 21st National Assembly, he held the dual roles of Democratic Party floor leader and chair of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, playing a major role in the legislative efforts for prosecution reform, including the establishment of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), one of the key policies of the Moon Jae-in administration.

After the 20th presidential election in 2022, he served as acting chair of the Democratic Party’s Emergency Response Committee.

In the 21st presidential election in 2025, he served as the general chief of staff for Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung’s campaign.

Within the party, he is regarded as one of the prominent pro-Moon Jae-in politicians.
